Apples are strictly an American fruit; so previous to Columbus it was impossible for the fruit to have been an apple.

But none of the other older sources indicate what type.

In most of the bible a vague reference does not mean the item; the vague and misleading item is almost without exception a metaphor regarding a reference to something else. Something the Esau/Moses line editors did not want to talk about. So they edited down to just the most basic; hoping later generations would not be curious and seek the true answer.

The true answer is the apple/fruit is a reference to the polarity of Northumberland mathematics.
