In Academics, the mob rule applies because the mob and the rules of biochem apply. You can apply the rules of biochem to people (eg each person is a molecule in the chain) and the physics is close enough of a match. Of course this explanation takes something which is on the extreme side of complex and makes it as simple as possible. Each molecule has different properties, different rules which push push, pull pull, neutral with other molecules.
